Until he retired in 1920, Babe played third base for the Reds, White Sox and Tigers. In 1935, he became a respected National League umpire, a job he held until 1956. Babe officiated in six World Series, serving as crew chief in two of them. He also umpired in four All-Star games. In his final game behind home plate, Babe called balls and strikes in Don Larsen’s perfect Game 5 in the 1956 World Series. Babes death was widely mourned throughout major league baseball. He was elected to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
