Sabath Anthony Mele

Sam has done it all: played, managed coached and scouted. In 1965, he managed the Minnesota Twins to their first American League championship. Nicknamed for his initials, Sam was a college basketball star before serving in World War II. After the war, he played the outfield for six different teams. Mele then coached for the Washington Senators before taking over as manager in 1961, their first year as the Minnesota Twins. During his six-year tenure, the team has significant success. After his managerial stint, the Red Sox hired Mele as a scout, a position he has held for 25 years.
