Richard Anthony “Dick” Drago
B: June 25, 1945, Toledo, OH
Successful as a starter and a then a star reliever, Drago pitched for the Royals, Red Sox, Angels, Orioles and Mariners. He began his MLB career with the Royals, becoming their ace in 1971, finishing fifth in that seasons AL Cy Young Award voting. During his five years in Kansas City, Dick averaged 32 starts, 10 complete games, and well over 200 innings pitched. As a reliever for Boston later in his career, he became the teams closer, helping to propel the Sox into the 1975 World Series. Drago gave up the last of Hank Aaron’s then-major league record 755 career home runs.
