Voted NL MVP in 1941, Dolph ranked among the top four home run hitters in the National League for eight years in a row. Traded to the Giants in 1943, he retired to his California cattle ranch. Dolph returned to baseball as player/manager with minor league Oakland, wanting to be near his wife and 7 children, including future big leaguer Doug Camilli. Another member of his athletic family, Dolph’s brother Frankie Campbell, was a heavyweight boxer who died as a result of being knocked out by Max Baer. Camilli joined the Dodgers Hall of Fame in 1984.
