Ernest Gilbert Broglio
B: 8/27/1935 Berkeley, Ca
Ernie pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. Between 1960 and 1963, he went 70-55 overall for the Cardinals. In 1960, his 21-9 record with a 2.74 ERA placed him third in NL Cy Young voting. In 1964, Broglio was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Lou Brock, and his career went downhill. Broglio retired from the Cubs at the age of 30, while Brock went on to become a Hall of Fame member. Ever since, the phrase Brock for Broglio “unfairly or not” has come to stand for a lopsided baseball trade.
